"LICHEN-ITES"

Finding Lichens on Dead Trees, Logs, Rock, Soil Etc.

prepared by Trish Smith, Warrensburg Middle School, 9/04

1.  Your job is to collect sample specimens and images of different lichens that you find on, or near, the ground.  You will record your findings on the Lichen Log.  COLLECT ONLY SMALL SAMPLES OF ANY LICHEN GROWTH THAT YOU WISH TO BRING BACK TO THE CLASSROOM.

2.  Assign each "find" a number on your Lichen Log and record the type of substrate (log, limb, rock, ground, cement, standing tree -live/dead) that it was found on.  Determine if you think it is foliose, crustose, or fruticose and place a checkmark in the appropriate column of the log..

3.  If you decide to collect a specimen, remember to take only a small amount.  Label a paper sack with your name, block, date, and the specimen number.  Place the specimen in the sack. Place a checkmark in the "collected" column of the log sheet.

4.  If you photograph the specimen, record the camera number and image number in the "image" column of the log sheet.
