Tree Height Data Sheet

Rough Estimate
1. Work in groups of
two. Measure the height of one person and record.
height of person __________cm
2. That person then stands straight against the tree. The second
person stands at a distance and estimates how many "heights" of that
person make up the tree height. Walk farther back and repeat. Do at least 4
trials or until you are getting a consistent estimate.
number of "heights" of person make up the tree

4. tree height = height of person X number of "heights"
(use average)
5. height of tree_______
Photo Method
1. Again measure the
height of a person (_________cm) and then have that person stands with back
against the tree.
2. The second person
stands back far enough to capture an image of the entire tree.
3. Back in the
classroom, load the image on a computer and use a ruler to measure and record
the height of person's image (__________cm) and the height of the tree's image
(_________cm).
4. Divide the
person's real height by the person's image height. Multiply the tree height by the resulting number to get the
tree's real height. ________cm
